Montanha do Pico is a stratovolcano that rose from the Atlantic seabed roughly 300,000 years ago, and at 2,351 metres it remains the highest point in all of Portugal — higher than anything on the mainland, higher than any peak in Madeira. The cone sits at the western end of Pico Island, and its shape is so complete, so textbook, that Portuguese sailors used it as a navigational mark for centuries. Whalers watched from its lower slopes. Vineyard workers below built the lava-walled currais that UNESCO inscribed as World Heritage in 2004. The mountain has erupted at least three times in recorded history, most recently in 1718 and 1720, when lava reached the sea near Santa Luzia and São João. What visitors climb today is a young volcano in geological terms — one that has simply been quiet for three centuries. A pico mountain climb guide is not a formality here. The Casa da Montanha at Caminho Florestal nº 9, Candelária, sits at 1,231 metres and functions as the trailhead, registration point and rescue coordination centre for the Reserva Natural da Montanha do Pico. Every ascent is registered. Every climber carries a GPS beacon. The route to the crater rim, Cabeço das Cabras, is marked by 47 numbered posts across roughly 3.5 kilometres of scoria, tephra and blocky basalt, gaining some 1,120 vertical metres with no switchbacks worth the name. Above the rim stands Piquinho, the small secondary cone that holds the true summit and the fumaroles that still vent warm sulphurous air onto climbers' hands. Access to Piquinho carries a conservation fee of 25 EUR per person, which funds the trail marking, the wardens and the reserve's endemic vegetation work — juniper, heather, Azorean cedar clinging to cinder. Cloud is the constant variable. Pico generates its own weather; the summit is above the inversion layer often enough that a climber can stand in clear sun while Faial, São Jorge and Graciosa disappear beneath a level white floor. On the clearest mornings, five of the nine Azorean islands are visible from the crater rim at once — a view that has changed very little since the eighteenth-century lava last cooled.
